Life After Residency: Fellowships and Private Practice

Fellowships and Private Practice

Our residents’ career options following residency training are unlimited. Throughout training, our residents have opportunities for teaching, leadership, and scholarship, including participation in clinical research, presentations at national medical meetings, and publication.

Each year, approximately 30-50% of our PGY-3 residents will pursue fellowship training, and our fellowship placement rate is outstanding!  In fact, 100% percent of our residents that have applied for fellowships over the past ten years have matched into a fellowship of their choice.  There are numerous opportunities for scholarly activity in each field of interest, and we provide close mentoring throughout the fellowship application process.  Currently, CMC offers ACGME-approved fellowship training programs in Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, and Geriatrics.

For those residents who do not pursue fellowship training, some will enter ambulatory practice, some will become hospitalists, and some will enter academic medicine. Our program’s comprehensive and flexible curriculum allows our residents to succeed regardless of their career path.

Many of our residents will choose to stay in the Charlotte region following residency training. The city of Charlotte and the surrounding area offers a diverse community with metropolitan amenities in a friendly, smaller town environment.  Charlotte truly is a great place to live and practice medicine!
