Glossary of Trauma Terms
Respiratory Therapists
Respiratory therapists are members of the health care team that provide respiratory support for patients with lung disorders or trouble breathing on their own. They work with the trauma team to operate, monitor and adjust equipment to assist with breathing including ventilators, and bipap/cpap machines. They perform therapeutic procedures, and breathing treatments that help to prevent respiratory infections. They assist the trauma team with procedures including bronchoscopies, tracheostomies and intubations.
