FAQs for Transfusion Services

What is the difference between a "type and cross" and a "type and screen/ hold"?
Both test for the patient's blood type and screen the patient for any antibodies that could make finding compatible blood difficult. The type and screen (or type and hold) does NOT include the crossmatching of units. If the doctor wants units set up on the patient they will need to order the type and cross.
