Why are blood cultures held for five days?
Routine blood cultures for sepsis diagnosis require five days before they can be finalized as negative. The majority of commonly infectious organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus species, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species will grow within the five day time frame.
