The oncology rehabilitation program at Carolinas HealthCare System’s Carolinas Rehabilitation recently received the world’s first accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This three-year accreditation recognizes the commitment of Carolinas Rehabilitation and Levine Cancer Institute to providing standardized treatment for cancer patients that includes the highest level of quality care.
Vishwa S. Raj, MD, associate medical director of Carolinas Rehabilitation and director of cancer rehabilitation, co-authored the CARF standards of care guidelines, which were published in early January.
“Rehabilitation is an integral component of cancer survivorship, and we are proud to be able to offer our patients with the most comprehensive and highly specialized care from a team of very skilled individuals,” said Dr. Raj. “Since partnering with Levine Cancer Institute about six years ago, our program has evolved substantially, and we look forward to witnessing its continued growth and expansion.”
The partnership between Carolinas Rehabilitation and Levine Cancer Institute brings cancer patients increased access to specialized cancer rehabilitation therapies provided by Dr. Raj and his multi-disciplinary team of physiatrists, as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists. The Institute’s growing number of cancer survivors, who often require comprehensive, long-term care, have unique needs that addressed through the specialized services provided by Carolinas Rehabilitation’s oncology rehabilitation program, which is the only dedicated inpatient program of its kind in the Southeast.
Dr. Raj provides cancer rehabilitation services on both an inpatient and outpatient side, and is a founding co-chair of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Cancer Rehabilitation Group. He recently was selected present at the 2nd annual Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation (STAR) Program Connection Conference on the topic of inpatient rehabilitation for cancer patients.
