Article

March is National Athletic Training Month, and with spring sports season just around the corner, Carolinas HealthCare System wants to recognize our team of nearly 60 certified athletic trainers that plays an essential role in keeping athletes healthy both on and off of the field.

We serve nearly 19,000 students across 33 schools in five different counties, and have the region’s only mobile training vehicle to travel to youth sporting events or for events in remote locations. Athletic trainers improve patient functional and physical outcomes, providing essential injury and illness prevention skills.

  • Our nationally certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are licensed to practice (LAT) in the state of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners (NCBATE). They provide a wide range of services to high-school athletes, including prevention, emergency care, clinical evaluations, musculoskeletal care and therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation for many problems and injuries.
  • Our ATCs all hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited program, and are trained to respond immediately to injuries, and provide care whenever necessary. ATCs also provide patient education, psychosocial intervention, nutritional counseling.
  • Our sports medicine department has received numerous awards and recognitions including the following:
    • Seven of our ATCs have been selected as Athletic Trainer of the Year, and two of our physicians have been elected as Sports Medicine Person of the Year by the NC Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
    • Jim Bazluki, LAT, ATC was named to the Hall of Fame for the NATA association, of which Scott Barringer, LAT, ATC is also a member.
    • Scott Barringer, will receive the NATA Athletic Trainer Service Award this summer at the annual national meeting.
    • Scott Barringer is the current President of the NC Athletic Trainers Association; Jim Bazluki, LAT ATC is Vice President; and Grady Hardeman, LAT ATC is Secretary.
    • Scott Barringer, LAT, ATC received the 2013 NC High School Athletic Association’s Special Person Award, and was also recognized as one of the Top 100 Athletic Administrators.
