The North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership (NCLP) will be hosting its 2nd Annual Free to Breathe® 5K & 1 mile Run/Walk & Rally in Charlotte this Saturday, May 18, at Park Road Park.
The event will be presented by Levine Cancer Institute and Carolinas Imaging Services, and will raise money for the NCLP.
Lung cancer survivors may also register to be honored at the rally, which begins at 8 a.m.
Only 16 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer survive five years; but that will soon change through a transformative effort by the National Lung Cancer Partnership and it’s local N.C. Chapter, to double the survival rate by 2022.
Lung cancer claims more than 160,000 lives in the United States every year, more than any other cancer and more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. The five-year lung cancer survival rate has barely budged in the past decade, inching up from 15 percent to 16 percent.
“Carolinas Healthcare System’s Levine Cancer Institute is committed to excellence in clinical care and innovative research for patients located throughout the Carolinas and beyond. “Through our collaboration with the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership we continue to strive towards improving the lives of patients with lung cancer,” said Dr. Edward Kim, Chair of Solid Tumor Oncology and Investigational Therapeutics at Levine Cancer Institute.
