CHS Joins Collaborative Effort to Launch Bike Share Program for Community Health
July 12, 2012
Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS) has teamed up with Charlotte Center City Partners and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina to launch Charlotte B-cycle, North Carolina’s first bike share program. The program brings a new dimension in health and wellness activities to the Charlotte community.
“Carolinas HealthCare System is proud to make a long term commitment to this new and exciting opportunity to bring a healthy and sustainable activity to Charlotte,” said Carol Lovin, President
of Carolinas HealthCare System’s Management Company. “Our commitment to the health of the communities we serve is central to our core mission, and our participation in the bike share program
provides us with a unique opportunity to build on that mission. We are excited to join Charlotte
Center City Partners and Blue Cross and Blue Shield in bringing this program to our community.”
Charlotte B-cycle will make 200 bikes available to rent at 20 stations throughout center city Charlotte
and surrounding areas, including a station located on the main campus of Carolinas Medical Center.
Users will choose a bike from a self-service docking station, make their trip and then return the rented
bike to the nearest docking location.
CHS’s support of the bike share program aligns with its other community wellness initiatives,
including a health center at Seventh Street Market providing the public with wellness consultations
and nutrition services; in-house health centers at various Charlotte YMCA locations; and health
education classes and physician lectures offered to the community as an extension of its CHS LiveWELL employee health program.
