Behavioral Health Center First Step at CMC-Union turns 20 in 2012
This year BHC First Step at CMC-Union will celebrate its 20th anniversary of providing treatment to those affected by the disease of addiction. In the early 90’s a group of local advocates persuaded the hospital that quality addiction treatment at an affordable price was needed in Union county. Thus, in 1992 BHC-First Step opened its doors in a wing of Carolinas Medical Center-Union, then known as Union Regional Memorial Hospital. Over the years, First Step has treated over 9,000 people through its detox, inpatient and outpatient programs. Today, BHC First Step continues to provide quality substance abuse treatment services to not only Union county but the entire state of North Carolina and beyond. The clinical program has kept pace by adopting evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. The medical side of treatment at First Step now includes the latest medications proven to minimize withdrawal and enhance recovery. In 2010 First Step achieved another milestone when it was approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing to provide inpatient and outpatient care for nurses needing substance abuse treatment. As we move into the future First Step will continue to stay focused on its mission of excellent care at an affordable price. Go to www.bhc-firststepcmcunion.org for more information.
