Teen Health Connection Announces 2011 “Charlotte, Get Your Move On!” Initiative
March 25, 2011
Teen Health Connection will hold the 2011 “Charlotte, Get Your Move On!” initiative from April 6 to April 9. Charlotte, Get Your Move On! is a youth-focused initiative dedicated to improving the overall health and quality of life for Charlotte adolescents by empowering them to make positive lifestyle decisions.
This year, Teen Health Connection is partnering with InnerACTIONS, a California-based educational outreach group that uses the performing arts to positively affect youth and prevent risky behaviors. The group will host dance performances in selected Charlotte high schools over the course of the four-day program, as well as an educational conference for teens and a community performance for the public. InnerACTIONS promotes the message of “prevention through inspiration” and will speak to teenagers on the topics of problem-solving, communication and cooperation to build self-empowerment. On the last day, there will be a mental health education conference for healthcare professionals.
“The Charlotte, Get Your Move On! initiative is important to our community because the activities will educate adults, as well as teenagers, about the issues adolescents face in their daily lives and how those issues truly affect them,” said Preeti Matkins, MD, Medical Director of Teen Health Connection. “The programs provide a great atmosphere for the teenagers to communicate with one another and form relationships and support groups to help them overcome obstacles they face.”
The 2011 Charlotte, Get Your Move On! schedule of events:
March 18-19 YouTube video messages will be posted by InnerACTIONS to promote the community performance and youth conference.
March 28-29 InnerACTIONS choreographers David Bortnick and Ryan Curren will arrive in Charlotte to teach selected local youth the art of hip hop dance. The two will also speak to teachers and other adolescent-serving adults about the importance of connecting to youth through their passions.
April 6-8 The remaining members of the InnerACTIONS dance troupe will arrive in Charlotte and perform 20-minute hip hop dance routines at local high schools. The performances are intended to get local youth excited about and interested in attending the youth conference April 9.
