Carolinas HealthCare System has received recognition for two hospitals – Carolinas Medical Center and Carolinas HealthCare System Lincoln – by U.S. News and World Report. The hospitals were named among a leading group of hospitals and healthcare systems recognized for excellence in the quality of care they provide being driven by the innovative use of technology.
Carolinas HealthCare System engages patients by encouraging them to manage their own health. The System recently unveiled OpenNotes on its patient portal, MyCarolinas. Patients can view their doctor’s notes and radiology reports online. Another benefit to keep patients connected is through the MyCarolinas Tracker app. Patients can store and track all their data from FitBit or Runkeeper on the app and on a dashboard on MyCarolinas.
“Our focus has always been providing patients with high quality care and a great patient experience. Embracing technology and excelling at its application is an important part of our efforts to continuously improve for the benefit of our patients,” said Carolinas HealthCare System Chief Physician Executive and Executive Vice President Roger Ray, MD. “This recognition is a reflection of how our system is implementing new technologies to empower patients and providers to improve the quality of care, access to care and the patient experience.”
The U.S. News and World Report “Most Connected” list is made up of 158 hospitals. To evaluate connectivity, the publication created three domains of survey questions that reflect a hospital’s overall commitment to healthcare’s ongoing digital transformation:
Clinical connectedness: Evaluates a hospital’s ability to exchange or share patient information electronically with any provider who needs it. Examples of such information in this domain are: a patient’s lab results; and notification to a primary care provider outside the hospital that a patient has been admitted to the hospital’s emergency room. This domain was worth about half of a hospital’s total score.
Patient safety: Evaluates a hospital’s ability to minimize harm to patients through computerized means, such as use of bar-coded wrist bracelets to verify patient’s identities before medications and other treatments are administered. This domain was worth about one-third of a hospital’s total score.
Patient engagement: Evaluates a hospital’s ability to enlist patients in their own care by providing them with electronic access to their medical information and even giving them the ability to update or modify it, for example by calling up their electronic medical record and adding weekly blood pressure reporting. This domain was worth about one-fifth of a hospital’s total score.
“Technology strengthens the relationship between the patient and the doctor,” said Craig Richardville, FACHE, MBA, senior vice president and chief information officer for the System. “Increasingly, patients are demanding we be more accessible and available through smart technology. Health tools and access that is online and mobile are valued by patients.”
In addition to the recognition from U.S. News & World Report, nine Carolinas HealthCare System hospitals and 230 practices have achieved HIMSS Stage 7 this year, the highest level of electronic medical record adoption.
Only 3.7 percent of hospitals across the U.S. have achieved Stage 7. The nine locations include Carolinas Medical Center, Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, Carolinas HealthCare System Pineville, Carolinas HealthCare System Lincoln, Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, Carolinas HealthCare System Union, Carolinas HealthCare System University, Carolinas HealthCare System Cleveland and Carolinas HealthCare System Kings Mountain.
