Virtual Visit Now Available Statewide

Carolinas HealthCare System is now making convenient, 24/7 medical care available to almost everyone in North Carolina. The System has expanded eligibility for its Virtual Visit service, and patients no longer need to have a Carolinas HealthCare System provider to take advantage of it.

Launched in fall 2014, Carolinas HealthCare System Virtual Visit provides live, immediate access to a medical provider via a camera-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No appointment is necessary.

“Patients are really enjoying the convenience of Virtual Visit, and the ability to get care from our providers at any time of the day or night,” said Charles Rich, MD, an internist at Mecklenburg Medical Group-Uptown who has led the development of Virtual Visit. “Now we’re offering this around-the-clock medical care to even more people, so they can get the care they need when and where it’s most convenient for them.”

Virtual Visit addresses a range of conditions, including:

  • seasonal allergies, bronchitis and flu
  • cold, cough, sinus and upper respiratory infections
  • conjunctivitis or pink eye
  • skin conditions

In addition to an evaluation by a Carolinas HealthCare System provider, patients can receive medical prescriptions and referrals for follow-up care if appropriate. A patented system developed by American Well offers a HIPAA-compliant, secure and confidential platform for Virtual Visit.

For Charlotte resident Josie Mazzaferro, Virtual Visit was just what she needed when she came down with the flu. Within minutes of logging on from her smartphone, she saw a provider and got a much-needed prescription – all without leaving her bed.

“I didn’t want to wait to visit a doctor, and I felt too sick to get out of bed anyway,” said Mazzaferro, a real-estate agent. “Within a few minutes I was getting care, lying on my pillow in my pajamas. I couldn’t believe how quick and easy it was.”

Patients may access Virtual Visit, or download the free mobile app from their device’s mobile app store by searching for Carolinas HealthCare Virtual Visit. Patients must be physically located in North Carolina at the time of care. Dependents under age 3 and ages 13 through 17 are not eligible to participate. The cost for each virtual visit is $49, and no insurance information is required or shared.

Virtual Visit is the latest way to access Carolinas HealthCare System’s comprehensive care offerings, joining its network of primary and urgent care locations, specialty care offices, satellite emergency departments and hospitals
