Carolinas HealthCare System

Issue 1 – August 2013

A Message from Roger Ray, MD, EVP, CMO

Roger Ray, MDThank you for reading the first issue of Carolinas HealthCare System's One Team - Physician Update. We developed this new feature as the direct result of physicians' feedback, in which several hundred of your peers indicated interest in receiving an electronic newsletter. This publication will be sent to you quarterly, so we can share System highlights and news about your colleagues.

Day to day, our physician community dedicates most of its time to caring directly for patients. To ensure you have the latest information about our organization beyond patient care, I wanted to share highlights from our September 2013 Carolinas HealthCare System Board meeting, at which time our organization's operational performance was reported.

Thank you for reading the first issue of Carolinas HealthCare System's One Team - Physician Update. We developed this new feature as the direct result of physicians' feedback, in which several hundred of your peers indicated interest in receiving an electronic newsletter. This publication will be sent to you quarterly, so we can share System highlights and news about your colleagues.

Here are a few recent highlights:

  • In April, we broke ground for Davidson Behavioral Health, which will double the number of inpatient beds available to our behavioral health patients.
  • Our Virtual Critical Care Command Center opened in May. In the first month of operations, critical care specialists performed more than 750 interventions, which included more than a dozen incidents of "code blue" cardiac arrest.
  • Soon, we will replace the current hospital in Anson County with a new model of rural care emphasizing prevention, primary care and faith community health ministries.
  • Last week, we announced our Patients First: Primary Care initiative. Please visit the new microsite on PhysicianConnect – our internal intranet site – to learn how we are shifting from a volume-based to a value-based system of care.

We cannot accomplish successes like these without excellent teamwork. "Physicians as Partners" is not just jargon or an empty buzz phrase. You are critical partners, and because of these valued ties, we are able to make Carolinas HealthCare System the success that it is.

Lastly, we all recognize that it is easier said than done to find the right Work/Life Balance. However, as a professional caregiver, it is important to take time to nurture and replenish yourself outside of work to maintain a positive quality of life. Motivated to inspire their peers to take time out to purposefully reflect on this issue, a team of physicians at Carolinas HealthCare System have worked to compile resources for you to consider. These materials are housed on a new Work/Life Balance page on PhysicianConnect. Please take a moment to review what they gathered to address this issue.

In closing, I want to express how deeply grateful I am for the support of the most dedicated and talented team of physicians I've encountered in my career. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Roger A. Ray, MD, MBA, FACPE
Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer
